Mobile e-learning

Mobile e-learning, or M-Learning, is e-learning taken mobile. It merges education with mobile technology. Not just cell phones, but any mobile technology that can be used when one is not in a fixed, predetermined location. Mobile e-learning decreases the limitation of location through the mobility of mobile devices.

Mobile e-learning focuses on the mobility of the learner, his interaction with portable devices, and learning with a focus on how to accommodate and support an increasingly mobile population. Over the last decade, mobile e-learning has gone from a small research field to an array of relevant tools used by schools, workplaces, museums, cities and rural areas around the world.

Mobile e-learning: advantages

M-learning’s biggest ace is that it’s accessible from virtually anywhere. It’s also collaborative, like most otherforms of e-learning. Interaction is fast and easy, so feedback and tips are nearly instantaneous. Mobile e-learning is also portable, replacing books and notes with digital files. And of course, m-learning is often more fun and as such, more effective.

Mobile e-learning: challenges

One of the main challenges with mobile e-learning is its dependence on electronic devices. When these fail or batteries run out, the mobile learning process ends. The same applies for connectivity: often m-learning takes an internet connection that is fast enough to stream the content.

Another challenge of m-learning is compatibility. One of the biggest incompatibilities is that of flash e-learning with Apple's iPads and iPhones. Flash simply won't run on it.

Yet another challenge of mobile e-learning is the format. Screen and key sizes need to be taken into account, as well as compatibility of file formats. It need to run on multiple screens and operating systems. Often the complete e-learning materials need to be reworded to run on the mobile device.
